Many a Thousand Gone

Randolph Riley

With the largest Black population in Canada, Nova Scotia has been known as the Mississippi of Canada.

The struggle for land title in North Preston, Halifax is known all throughout Black Nova Scotia, in party because they are all too familiar with the story of Africville, the shoreline Halifax community demolished in 1964. Land titles played a big role in how the community was taken from its residents and destroyed, to only end up building a dog park in its place. The community of Africville fought the same fight that North Preston is fighting today, but lost and was bulldozed to the ground. The land title saga was the reason why the city could bulldoze without consideration of its residents.
